Across recorded cosmological traditions of southeastern Aboriginal Australia, the inhabited country lay beneath a substantial sky, bounded at the distant margins and, in some accounts, supported where the heavens met the earth. Beyond that enclosure lay another country—land, water, trees, and ancestral presence continuing beyond the visible sky.
This plate draws together those recorded world-structures into a single cosmological scene: finite inhabited country surrounded by waters, a vast solid vault held at its margins by great timber-like supports, the Moon and stars beneath its interior, and an opening through which the country beyond the heavens becomes visible. Beneath the earth, a concealed solar passage suggests the unseen return of the Sun toward the east.
Rendered in aged ochre, weathered blue, charcoal black, and parchment tones, the composition follows the character of an old ethnographic world plate rather than a modern celestial diagram.
